MediaWiki talk page conversations
This skill involves conducting conversations on MediaWiki talk pages according to standard community practices.
Process
- New Topics: Always start a new topic with a level 2 heading (e.g., `== Topic Name ==`). New topics must always be appended to the bottom of the page.
- Conversation Order: Conversations should proceed chronologically. Append new messages to the end of the relevant section.
- Threading: Use colons (`:`) to indent replies and create threads. Each reply should have one more colon than the message it is responding to.
- Signatures: Always sign your posts using four tildes (~~~~). This automatically adds your username and a timestamp.
- Pinging: To notify a user, link to their user page (e.g., `User:Username`) or use a ping template if available (e.g., `@Username:`).
- Integrity and Etiquette:
- Never edit or reformat other users' comments.
- Never edit your own previous messages once they have been responded to; if you need to clarify or add more info, post a new reply or start a new section.
- Maintain the chronological and threaded structure of conversations.
- Archiving: When a talk page becomes too long or contains many resolved discussions, move the older content to an archive subpage (e.g., `.../Archive 1`) and add a `` template to the main talk page.
Examples
